What is data mining? Data mining is the process of extracting valuable, useful and understandable patterns from the large volumes of data being collected by today’s organisations. Once this knowledge has been extracted from your historical data, it can be used to help predict future events.

Who should attend? Knowledge discovery and data mining should be of interest to anyone who owns or collects data. Courses can be delivered in a number of formats suitable to different audiences.

  • Half-day seminars tailored to a particular organisation or industry sector
  • One day executive briefings suitable for managers
  • Two day short courses covering a detailed description of the complete KDD process and introductory sessions on the software and techniques that can be used
  • One week intensive course which covers the basic topics of the two-day course in much greater detail along with some more advanced sessions (and hands on sessions)
  • Two week course as above but with assessment that can form part of an Advanced Certificate or BMSc in Knowledge Extraction offered by the University of East Anglia

In addition, courses can either be taught onsite or at another suitable venue of your choice.

Why should I be interested in data mining? As far back as 1996, in an advanced technology research note, Gartner Group listed data mining in the top five categories or technologies that will have a major impact on business in the next 3-5 years. Since then interest in data mining and knowledge management has soared. Companies are learning more about the data they collect, gaining a competitive advantage and making multi-million pound savings. However, many companies are still investing heavily in collecting and archiving their data without realising its full potential. Typical KDD projects have investigated customer behaviour, planned direct marketing, detected fraudulent activity and identified machine faults in manufacturing.
